city iowa

With the frequency and magnitude of most natural disasters in recent times, you will agree with me that nature seems to be angry with the way and how we abuse the environment. Some say it is a sign of the end of time. It is disheartening to see millions of people affected by natural disasters such as Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in China and more recently the floods in Iowa.

Iowa floods that ravaged the city in June 2008 has left hundreds of families homeless, businesses closed, and the rest of the city stretched by an infrastructure in ruins. When the waters subsided, there will be many questions to be asked: Why the Army Corps and the USGS not accurately predict the flow of water in the tank? Why the city does not give owners time to save their property? Where was the foresight after a snowfall record for emptying the tank at an earlier date? These questions are asked, but where are the answers?

Cedar Rapids after the Cedar River retreated many people have had the chance to get their first look inside their flood-ruined houses. The city had put up a handful of checkpoints leading into the flooded districts. At the First Avenue, near one of the sections the most damaged of the city, residents were waiting to escort the National Guard at home where the water had completely receded. They could check damage, but could not take what they could carry on foot.

Some of those returned were in tears. Dan Bowers has been one of those waiting in a line that goes back half a block or so. He said when he was evacuated Wednesday evening, he had no idea the flood would so bad. "I moved everything from basement to first floor," he said. "My house has never flooded before, and I therefore thought it would save everything. "

But then he saw the video on television of a boat through the water depth in his neighborhood. He thought he had lost everything. "All my furniture, all my paintings, personal items, clothing, appliances, he said. Replacing these things, and repair of flood damage or rebuild, if necessary, will not be easy for Bowers. "Most damage is done in areas of flood plain where there is no insurance, he said. "I know I did not have insurance against floods.

There are probably thousands of others in the same situation in Cedar Rapids, promising to make the process of rebuilding the city much more difficult. Bowers, a permanent resident, says he will probably be years before the city returned to normal.

Disasters such as floods Iowa continue to occur. They are what we call acts of nature. The question we must now ask ourselves: "How are we ready when the next disaster coming?

My thoughts and prayers are with all families affected by floods in Iowa.

Mortal City Mortal City

This 1996 album was a breakthrough of sorts for Dar Williams, moving her from the obscure folkie circuit to the obscure alternative singer-songwriter circuit. Mortal City comes closest to capturing her live show, and many of the songs here--"Iowa," "The Family," "The Christians and the Pagans"--have become live-set favorites. Like Williams herself, this disc is sentimental, sincere, and emotional;...

The Making of the Statue of Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of Peace (Trinity Heights, Sioux City, Iowa) The Making of the Statue of Immaculate Heart of Mary, Queen of Peace (Trinity Heights, Sioux City, Iowa)

The development of Trinity Heights began around 1985, when Father Harold Cooper, then pastor of St. Joseph Church in Sioux City, conceived the idea to bring a statue of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Queen of Peace to Sioux City. He approached a small group of laymen and generated enthusiasm for the project. Fr. Cooper had seen a thirty-foot stainless steel statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sant...
