Have you ever met someone who Barbary, stubborn and determined to do or say the opposite of what you did? Now how about you the opposite, where you and another person that we hear so well and agree on the point that you seemed to be on the "same wavelength?
What was the difference between the two peoples and how they made you feel? And what Earth does to do with printing a job interviewer? The difference is that nobody No 2 found one or more elements of common ground between the two of you, and cultivated it – with care.
Person No. 1, "The Jerk", call it, has maintained a self-centered focus during whole conversation probably short-lived, never venturing to consider or ask questions about your experience, thoughts or feelings.
It has to do with the very real phenomenon that if you can make someone feel good about himself or herself, you can make person walking with a great sense of yourself.
The way to do it when you are interviewed-cons may seem intuitive when you read it here. But know that it works. The way you make them feel good about yourself is to ask the question another person, then shut up and listen. It works because is not the idea of an interview someone to learn more about you? Apparently, yes. But human nature is such that people like always to have an audience and then talk about them.
Overview of an Interview
Remember that a conversation, not interrogation. So ask questions. Be sure to highlight your past accomplishments, but avoid talking about yourself all the weather.
Funnel your questions to the interviewer, from general to specific: What's working here? -> What is your great business plan to focus this year? -> Can you tell me about an experience or have worked on projects that stood out for you this year?
Find something about the interviewer and to build a conversation around it – even if you have little direct knowledge of this specific topic. For example, if it talks about a weekend passion for Civil War Re-enacting, you could talk about the biography of Lincoln you read last summer. If she mentions a Paris vacation, you can mention your love of French language and how you have studied for years at school.
Some might ask, is this manipulation to interact with people? Only the same as being a racing driver is car expert "manipulator" of cars, or how to select shares of market manipulation.
Having an expert to understand communication tools is no different. This is the way to get ahead of people who are only focused on themselves. Most is that you must take a sincere interest in the person or persons with whom you do business. And your proposal must be win-win. Most people can a can see several blocks.
Practice Makes Mastery
Practice, the next time you are engaged in a conversation – resist the urge to go "Jerk Mode" and blablabla on your subject, instead let the other do the work. Helping a few well-placed questions.
When you take this simple but few communication skills your next job interview, you'll already be in much better position to pass the interview that the candidate "I" focused.
Bonus: When it is time to write your thank you notes to people who interviewed you, you have a mine rich in extracts of staff to remind each interviewer the single conversation you share!
