For years, I learned from my parents and others interested in me "study hard, go to great school, receive a good education and land a great paying jobs. " This has been "accepted" the truth as a map to happy and fruitful life.
Well, I did … for a moment ….
Then suddenly it hit me. That By all those companies like Merrill Lynch and Bear Sterns?
It reminds me of one of my friend, let's call Kimberly. Kim was very bright and motivated girl. It was he who followed above mantra to the letter. It was top 1% of its graduates from the University Brown. Then she worked for a consulting firms top management in the world. After a few years ago, she returned to school Trade and earned an MBA from Northwestern. That's when I met him. I was introduced to her at a party home in Evanston.
Upon graduating from there, she landed a job at Bear Sterns as a forex trader. Of course, it was not a work of investment bank which has dreamed, but the hours were a little better. I kept contact with her throughout the year even when she moved from Chicago to New York. She made six figures plus bonus health. Her fiance and bought a condo in Greenwich Village and moved together. Everything seemed good for them.
Then Bear Sterns bankruptcy. His paycheck and stock options have disappeared. Her fiance was laid off too. Before both were making six figures, but now they could not afford to pay mortgages. They sold their car as well as emptied their savings. They have sold their condo for low loss and moved with his parents in Kansas City.
Things do go back to Kim though. Has a fiance employment in a local bank. They left the house with his parents and moved them. She decided to stay home, however, because they are on the way of being parents themselves.
So what happened? Have we been lied to our whole life? We thought that good education and good Work was all we needed to live a happy life. Well, we were told what to do but no reason behind this logic.
Now, Let's take a look about why the age old advice. What is the end result of having a good job? Good, regular paychecks. In other words, a large steady, predictable cash flow positive. Well, which is based on assumptions that the company gives us higher wages will be in business and we continue to strive.
But what have we seen to date? That is not the truth, Is it? Companies go out of business and people lose their jobs. Nothing lasts forever. What should we do? We need to diversify the cash flows.
