• Staff who use social media sites during the working time do it in a way which amounts to a casual chat. They are part of everyday life so that employers can embrace them as well.

Social psychologists suggest that educating employees on acceptable use of social media sites is the best way to go. Instead introducing bans, employers had better educate employees on how they can integrate their online chat in the daily work practice.

Staff are more likely to accept a policy of "controlled use" that describe the do's and don'ts. Here are some simple education.

• Give details on what type of information should be shared on sites social media for corporate secrets and other commercially sensitive matters can be protected.
• Demonstrate to staff that the policy the company is in line with other organizations so that they do not feel they are targeted or restricted in any way.
• Train staff to use these sites to continue the image of your company and how to engage customers in the most appropriate.

By recognizing the existence and relevance of social media sites, and then establish policies for managing your personal use, you will be well on the way to maintain a harmonious workplace. Your IT service team may then continue with the status quo.
