This is not a ghost town, but it is there. I spent a day in Hannibal, Missouri. I am a teacher of high school English and simply could not pass up the chance to visit the home of American author Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain. Mid-July I thought the crowded streets Hannibal tourists who want a glimpse of the spot on the Mississippi River where the hero of Mark Twain's Huck Finn sailing on his raft. I thought people would be lined up en masse to visit the farm and visit Clemens cave where Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn had many adventures. But an afternoon of hot summer I sailed in the solitary pleasure through shops bursting with Twain novels, biographies and memorabilia. A Japanese tourist and a father and son from England were the only other people who visit Becky Thatcher cottage with me. A boy and Girl dressed as Tom Sawyer and his friend Becky bored while waiting for tourists to show up and pay $ 7 to see their picture taken with the couple literary famous. Horse drawn carriages visited the city only a few karting passengers each. I attended an excellent one-man show put by actor Richard Garey. Standing in a stadium full of Twain memorabilia, Garey made a re alive and teaching, creating a conference by Mark Twain and history presentations said. Mark Twain traveled the United States entertaining the crowds in the late 1800s Unfortunately, only eight of us were present Garey at the show staged in Hannibal, a night in July.

Do not get me wrong. Hannibal, Missouri is charming. It's just that the whole place seems a little "down on his luck. We stopped in both rooms which was beautiful and attractive in the brochures that we had picked up. The doors were locked, the peeling paint and overgrown yards. The high school English teacher who combined his income by running the library at Mark Twain museum had plenty of time to "talk shop" with me since I was her only client. We wanted to try a local restaurant for dinner Hannibal, but many hours, seven have been closed, and others, I must admit looked just a little the shabby side. We finally settled on Fair Lula, a former brothel turned today into a respectable restaurant. It was founded by an enterprising woman from Chicago at the turn of the century. The food was not gourmet but the portions were plentiful and friendly service. We could not resist to remember, however, it was once a center of gambling and prostitution and was frequently raided by police. Done the "ladies of the evening 'who lived there there a hundred years ago still haunt the place you wonder?

Literary tourism seems to be flourishing. People rushed to the sites mentioned in the popular book The Da Vinci Code. The Prince Edward Island's tourism industry thrives on the Anne of Green Gables author Lucy books Maud Montgomery. So what's the problem in Hannibal, Missouri, the setting for the novels of Twain? I checked some websites Traveler Review which mentions several reasons for the decline of Hannibal, whose lack of advertising, limiting hours of operation and almost cynical attitude among residents their author famous hometown.

I liked Hannibal, Missouri and is pleased that I visited. Hopefully the city will be able make the necessary changes to attract more tourists. Otherwise, it could become a place inhabited only by ghosts of Mark Twain and distribution interesting characters he created in his novels memorable.
