To work as a certified nursing assistant, you must complete a training course nursing aide, then pass the certification test CNA provided by the State Board of Nursing. The test consists of two parts: a written exam and a practical or "practice test" skills of the CNA. Licensing is done by the state, so you want to register for tests in the state where you expect to work in.

In most cases you will need to test with a group. The written exam is usually given before the skills test, and everyone will test at the same time. You have to answer about 100 multiple choice questions and are usually given two hours to complete. The written test is on patient care and protocols, patient monitoring and record keeping, and laboratory testing procedures.

Everything on the written portion will have been covered in your classes for CNA. It's a good idea to review your class materials, documents and maps before certification testing, especially if you are not taking it right after the end of the course. Following the written portion, the instructor takes the tests are complete, and then individuals will be asked to exercise to test their skills at a time. You may be asked to wear a "model" or an assistant with you to facilitate the testing of skills. This person would act as your patient for you to demonstrate your skills. Indications test skills vary, and may not be the same from person to person. You will not know what skills you will be asked to fill in until the actual testing.

You can you expect the test to cover the most common skills that you meet. This could include performing measurements of vital signs – blood pressure, pulse, respiration and demonstrate the proper way to make a bed, both with and without a patient him strolling or moving your patient – helping them dressing, moving in their destination and departure of a wheelchair, etc., and dealing with emergencies such as choking.

You will not know the outcome of your test right then and there, the results will be sent to you. However if you were paying attention in class and understand what you've learned, and taken the time to study and review your documents before taking the test, you should have no problem passing. Once you have earned your certification, you are then free to work as Certified Nursing Assistant, Home Health Aide, nurse's aide or other similar position in any hospital, nursing home or other institution in your state.
