Cheapest way to travel from Halifax to St. John?

My father has to travel to Saint John, New Brunswick for a couple of days for intreview employment. It was not anywhere else in Canada except in Halifax, then questions the best way to go. He also wondered any cheap motels / places to stay at. Also, if I had come with him (I'm his daughter) How much would the increase in expenditure? All suggestions and advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
