Yesterday, a young brother and sister down the street knocked on our door and wanted to know if we had a job for them. She was 10 and he was 7.
My husband shook his head, but I could not bear to refuse, so I created a job for them. I let my empty house that had already been drawn earlier in the day.
A waste of money, you say. I prefer to think that it is an investment in education two children who had taken the initiative to try to find work. This, in my book, is an admirable thing in this day and age of a large many people who want everything handed to them without any effort made by them at all.
No, my carpet does not need to be cleaned, but the children did not know that. It was clear that none of them had never used a cleaner before, but they were learners greedy. Yes, they were a little young to be a really good job, but my husband stepped in to teach them to do "right" according to its standards. He showed them where the plug were installed for each room, instructed the younger brother how he could help by taking the lead as he followed his sister and even explained how it could take until the string itself if it ever had to do the job alone.
It took an hour to work fifteen minutes but you could see they were very proud of themselves when their work was finally done. We have paid, and they thanked us politely, shaking their money as they chattered together as they walked down the sidewalk toward their home.
If you're retired, or temporarily not work, why not take a lesson from these kids? Get out there and see if you can not find someone willing to create a temporary job for you.
Of course, you probably want something more than a chance in time to clean a carpet that has been cleaned, but hopefully you have more than two children and have a little more experience under your belt.
Here are some tips you might take from them that are:
1. These two children spoke up and asked for a job. You must do the same thing, and let people know you're looking for a job.
Watching TV all day is not really likely to produce work for you. Knock on the door and distribute a leaflet with a list of things you can do with your name, phone number, and some references people who can vouch for you.
Put in applications at every opportunity. Set a goal so many applications per day is a way of keep this activity occasionally boring. Sooner or later, you can get lucky and hit just the right place at the right time, they need someone with your experience.
Let your friends. Studies have shown that most jobs are in the recommendation of a friend or acquaintance we must not neglect to spread the word in your job search.
2. My two carpet cleaners were also willing to accept any job they could get. Indicate your willingness to do the same. (Within reason of course.)
The Most of us do not feel like digging ditches, but if digging ditches is the only thing available, resign yourself to what, at least until something better along. Maybe you've done that kind of work before. Be prepared to diversify and try something else. Maybe you'll like even better.
3. When you get a job, to give the best of your ability and be prepared to Learn more about this from those who have authority over you.
My little neighbors, even if the task was difficult for them, went to She enthusiastically to the suggestions and my husband gave them to action. What they have learned about this work will give them more confidence and the ability of the next time they rent for a similar task. Take every opportunity to learn from the experiences of new jobs — you know never know when that might be useful in the future.
4., And show appreciation for the opportunity work.
Jobs are hard to come by in this economy. We have not had to hire these young vacuum our carpets, but I'm happy that we did. They had the opportunity to learn something new, and showed their appreciation by thanking us before departure.
When you find the job you are looking for, a positive attitude, not only to your employer, but also to your colleagues. Nothing ruins a day's work more soon as the employee who comes to work in a bad mood, gripes about work all day and can not wait to rush the door to end of the day.
Above are just some observations I made during the time our two enterprising neighbors' children spent with us. Do not lose your own job search, because there is someone somewhere who might be waiting for you to show them door.
