I know this might be an odd combination, but if you have to install VMWare vCenter 4.0 and MS SQL, including reporting service on the same machine (Windows Server 2008 64 bit), here's how it is done. Be warned, VMWare will end this configuration, but I had no problems with that until this point.

VMware vCenter requires a SQL database (SQL 2005 or SQL 2008, at the time of writing). While you can use a database remote data, we need a local installation and we need SQL Server Reporting Services installed. After installation the Windows operating system that we have a full installation of SQL Server 2005, including Service Pack 3. We have not tried this with SQL 2008 before, but SQL 2008 is not to use IIS to manage Reporting Services and has made it very difficult to manage 2 appliction and ports they use (hint: the overlapping ports are 80 and 443).

After installing SQL 2005, you can install vCenter vSphere 4. During installation you can change the ports using vCenter, however that does not work. SQL Report Services needs port 443 for internal communication. I had changed vCenter the port to 444 when you use SQL 2008, but apparently ignores this setting vCenter port and port 443 locks still later one – making Reporting Services kaput. Then, install vCenter with the default ports.

Now go to IIS (tip: SQL 2005 requires that you install all the IIS components Server 2008) and change the port for information services on port 81. There is no need to touch the port 443 for MS SQL Reporting Services to work. Now, open the Report Services Configuration tool and select the Web Service Identity tab. Set AppPool to "Classic.NET" for the Report Server and Report Manager.

MS SQL Reporting Services should work just fine as long as you specify the new port in the URL to access these reports.

Why SQL 2008 does not work for me? SQL 2008 Report Services does HTTPS use a lot more traffic that SQL 2005 does. Since VMWare vcenter locks the port (although you would not say), SQL 2008 Reporting Services will not function properly. Please note that this is a very high order level on issues related to execution vCenter VMWare and MS SQL Reporting Services from the same server.
